Supporting Municipalities
As the federal regulator of pesticides, Health Canada's Pest Management
Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recognizes that municipalities are
becoming increasingly involved in the regulation of pesticide
use.
The PMRA, in partnership with provincial and territorial governments, developed the Action Plan for Urban Use Pesticides to
help Canadians reduce reliance on pesticides in the urban setting and
to address public concerns about pesticide use in urban areas.
The Action Plan includes the Healthy
Lawns Strategy for Urban Pesticide Risk Reduction to help
reduce reliance on pesticide use for lawn care through Integrated Pest
Management (IPM) approaches such as pest prevention, use of reduced risk
products and application of pesticides only when necessary.
To support municipalities in decision-making and communications with their
constituents, an information package was distributed to members of the
Federation of Canadian Municipalities in 2005.
