Many pesticides, such as insect repellents,
swimming pool chemicals, and weed killers, are commonly found in households
today. These products can pose hazards if they
are not used and stored in the recommended
way. That's why Health Canada requires that you
read the label and follow the
instructions on it. The hazard symbols
and safety warnings give you the
information you need to know to use
the product safely. Learn the symbols
and follow the instructions - you could
prevent an injury or save a life!
Safety Tips
- Teach children that the symbols mean:
DANGER! DO NOT TOUCH.
- Keep all pesticide containers, even the
sealed or empty ones, out of sight and out
of reach of chiidren.
- Keep pesticides in their original containers
and make sure the labels are not removed.
- Read the label before each use. If there is
anything on the label that you don't
understand, ask for help.
- Close the cap on the container tightly, even
if you set it down for just a moment.
- Never mix different pesticides together.
- Never let kitchen utensils or dishes come in
contact with pesticides.
Keep emergency numbers by the phone.
If someone is injured:
- Call the Poison Control Centre immediately by dialing the emergency number from the first
page of your telephone book. Or call your doctor.
- Give the information from the label to the person answering.
- Bring the container with you when you go for help.
The SYMBOL on a label shows a PICTURE inside
a FRAME.
The PICTURE tells you the TYPE of danger.

EXPLOSIVE
The container can explode if heated or punctured. Flying
pieces of metal or plastic from the container can cause serious injury,
especially to eyes.
CORROSIVE
The product can burn your skin or eyes. If swallowed,
it will damage your throat and stomach.
FLAMMABLE
The product or its fumes will catch fire easily if it is near heat, flames
or sparks.
POISON
If you swallow, lick, or in some cases, breathe in the chemical, you
could become very sick or die.

CAUTION means
temporary injury may be frequent. Death may occur with
extreme exposure.
WARMING means
it may cause temporary or permanent injury, or death.
DANGER means exposure to very low quantities may
cause death, or temporary or permanent injury.
A pesticide label will always have:
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
READ THE LABEL BEFORE USING
DlRECTlONS FOR USE that explain how to
use the product.
GUARANTEE that names the active
ingredients and states the amounts of each.
PRECAUTIONS that tell you what the significant hazards
are and how to protect yourself, others, pets as well as the environment.
FIRST AID INSTRUCTIONS that tell you what to do in case someone
is accidentally poisoned or injured by the pesticide. |
